Q1 -- Feltmaking Workshop:

Handmade felt is believed to be the oldest textile technique – dating to the Stone Age. Explore the possibilities of color, texture, and form with this medium, using only wool and hot water.  Students will comb dyed wools together to create a personal color palette; layer these colors to form felt “geodes” and cylinders; and slice these to create patterning for a flat felt. After felting, the flat felts can then be embellished with yarns, fleece curls, etc. for textural wall pieces, or stitched to become pillows, purses, etc.

Q2 -- Beyond Scrapbooking - Collage as an Art Form:

Charlotte artist and art writer, Linda Luise Brown will walk us through a short history and understanding of the collage-such as examples by Picasso and contemporary artist, David Hockney. She will also discuss her process as a collage artist and then participants will make their own personal collages from materials provided.

Participants are encouraged to bring some of their own “ephemera” – such as postage stamps, old photographs that can be “sacrificed,” hand-writing samples (becoming rarer by the day!), pieces of ribbon, bonbon papers, candy wrappers, old greeting cards, etc.

At the end of the class, we’ll have a short critique/analysis of collages made during the evening.

Q4 --Tea Stain Art - Green Tea Anyone?

Let’s have a tea party!  While sipping one of our favorite beverages, we will create frame-able wall art and/or individual cards from delicately stained used tea bags.  Working with these “found objects” allows us to not only celebrate our creativity in entirely new ways, but gets us into recycling mode as well.  (Green tea, anyone?)  Discover the ways in which Judy, a professional studio artist, makes the journey from conceptual idea to finished form and apply them to this rewarding and sociable activity.

Start saving your tea bags!
